imma say all the words inside my head
Don't you tell me what you think that I could be
It was like Dylan needed more punishment in his life that he was on the plane again heading to California. Like he just wanted more people hating him as he drove to Adrian's house. Empty handed at that.
And as he rang the doorbell to her house, he fully expected her to slam the door in his face. He deserved it for the way he left things.
He had been selfish yet again, thinking of himself when Adrian was the one who needed the help. Cassidy had been right to point it out. Dylan had told his dad that he wanted to oversee the project they had for a California office, even though he was needed in Montana.
Thankfully, his dad saw his act as taking initiative and put him in charge of it but that was definitely not on his mind as he stood rocking on the balls of his feet in front of Adrian's door. He rang again for good measure and waited.

All The Boys
She came here to entertain you
It was safe to say that things were taking a turn for the worst. It wasn't bad enough that Dylan had left without much of anything, but the next day her mother had collapsed and was rushed to the hospital. They'd told her she would be fine, that she was dehydrated and that her lungs were under a lot of pressure, all things considered, she wasn't dying any faster. They kept her for a few days of observation to make sure she remained well enough to be taken back home. Adrian hadn't called anybody.
The next week that they'd spent together, Amelia was less herself. Like she'd dropped the facade of health and wellness only to let herself wither in bed. Adrian tried, she really tried to get her out and about, to do anything, but it was no use. So while Amelia rested, Adrian had begun going through all of their things in the house. She'd had to discuss the will and was working towards the arrangements for a funeral. Even as painful as it all was, she treated it as emotionless as she could because otherwise she was going to break.
She was sitting in the middle of the living room with papers and pictures scattered around her. There were phone numbers of people that she'd met, but hardly knew. She'd been searching high and low for grandparents that she could contact. It almost seemed like a goose chase that she wasn't about to win. When the doorbell rang, she swore and scrambled to get up, hoping that the noise wouldn't wake her mother. The last thing she needed was for her to come out while Adrian was searching for missing pieces of her life. It rang again and she sighed in frustration as she yanked the door open. Her eyes lifted and she went to speak, but when she noted who it was, she froze.
Isn't she a dream come true?

Don't you tell me what you think that I could be
It had only been two weeks but seeing Adrian again brought forth the emotions he had begun to feel for the past few months. Not seeing her had lessened the sting of not having her around but now, seeing her in front of him, it was open season.
For a while, he just stood there and took her in. It was obvious that she hadn't been taking care of herself. She still looked beautiful, there was no going around that, but she looked run down.
"How's...your mom?" He asked finally.

All The Boys
She came here to entertain you
It had to have been minutes before he said something and she could feel his discomfort coming off him in waves. He had every right to be uncomfortable. And she was waiting for her own emotions to come back in full force. She'd shut them down so much in the last few weeks that she was sure it was just a delayed reaction. Even as she looked at him, she noted that she was looking at him differently again. No longer did she think he was becoming the sweet, pleasant guy that she happened to adore. No, he just showed that he hadn't changed and he was instead just toying with her while she was vulnerable.
His question made her nostrils flare and she placed a hand on his chest to push him back so that she could step out and shut the door behind her. Adrian had no intention of her mother hearing what was about to transpire between them. She'd been disappointed enough by men, she didn't need to see that Adrian was following down the same path.
"How fucking dare you come back here and ask me that," She spat at him. Adrian was exhausted, extremely so, but the adrenaline of her anger towards him was pushing her forward. "What the fuck do you care? You left remember? You don't get to ask me that shit."
Isn't she a dream come true?

He stepped back when she pushed him away and when the tirade came, Dylan ignored the squeezing in his chest. He deserved all this, he realised it. It didn't make it any easier to swallow but he knew that was the entire point.
"I'm sorry Adrian. I panicked. I have no right, I know that but I had to come back and see if everything was okay. Cas came at me hard so I didn't know whether you told her or not. I just...wanted to make sure you're alright."
He glanced up at the door behind Adrian and then back at her. "Is she alright, Adrian?"

His apology fell on deaf ears. She couldn't focus on his reasoning or his excuses because it made her sick. She'd trusted him with the only person that she'd ever loved more than herself and he threw it in her face as if it was nothing. He panicked and she hated that she understood why he panicked, but it didn't make anything better or easier. He'd done the same thing that he did to his sister. Nothing changed and now she understood on some small level why Cassidy hated him so much. It only got worse when she realized it hurt so badly because she'd started falling for him.
Adrian shook her head and laughed, "Cassidy made you feel bad? That's why you came back. Because she wanted to know if I was alright, not because you did." She'd have called Cassidy if she knew it would help, but she could barely force words through her mouth to everyone else that she had to call, let alone someone she wanted to. Of course it was harder without anyone, but it gave her the chance to handle it analytically rather than emotionally. It was the only way she could get through it.
He asked again and she stared up at him, "She's dying, Dylan. What the fuck do you think?" She didn't owe him any details, she didn't owe him a chance to make things better. Adrian couldn't feel anything but anger. She was hollow and empty because it was like she was taking care of a corpse already.
Isn't she a dream come true?

Her accusations didn't anger him the way it would have a few weeks ago and he didn't like it. Of course he didn't like it. Growing up was difficult, having to grow up because the women in his life hated him even more so. He had no more excuses, he was just a shit person and the people important to him now know that.
The easier way out was to leave. Go back to his partying ways. Screw every moving skirt. Fuck up his dad's plans for his future. Easy. But somehow, in the past few months, Dylan found that he didn't want to take the easy route anymore. He couldn't.
"Adrian, I understand where your anger is coming from. I understand that I'm the cause of at least part of it. But I'm here. I'm...not going anywhere. I understand if you don't want me or need me here but I am. I'm here for your mother too."
It sounded so cliche as it left his mouth but there was truth in his words, more than he'd ever shown in years.

She came here to entertain you
She moved past him to sit on the stairs that had led him to her door. Sinking down, she wrapped her arms around her knees and stared ahead. He understood, of course he understood. How could he not? This was the exact reason he'd fallen out with his sister and yet he was making the same mistake over and over again. She didn't know how to stop him because she didn't want to be angry with him and she wanted what was best for Cassidy and his relationship. Panicking when someone needed him...wasn't a good start.
"Oh, so now that you've gotten over panicking, you can stay. How fucking chivalrous of you," She snapped. Her anger was deflating though, despite her best efforts. Adrian was so sick of hating men. She just wanted one that could change her mind and show her differently. But he was proving to be a failed attempt and she wasn't sure if he'd be able to fix it. With a deep breath, she raked her fingers through her hair and slid them down her face.
Adrian shook her head again, "You know, I didn't ask you to stay. I didn't expect you to make everything better. All I needed was a distraction. Something minor, something simple. You couldn't even offer me that. I wasn't seeking some emotional connection, I just wanted you to help me forget for a little while." That was all they'd been good at anyway, the physical part.

Her words were harsh and cold and he would have walked away again had he not have been invested in making things right. Making things right by Adrian could lead to making things right by Cassidy. But the line had blurred on him somehow and he honestly didn't know who he cared for more.
What she said next should have made him lash out but it didn't and he couldn't even lie and say he didn't understand why. That was his motto all through his adulthood. Women were just playthings and distractions to him to mask his poor little rich boy complex.
"No amount of distraction is going to make you forget, Adrian." He said as gently as possible as he stood by her. "It's just going to prolong the inevitable and I don't want you to feel any worst than I did when I lost my mom."
He shook his head and rubbed at his eyes. "I can't give you simple. Not anymore."

All The Boys
She came here to entertain you
Adrian waited for the storm, the verbal lashing that she expected from him. When it didn't come, she just got more frustrated. She wanted him to fight back. She wanted him to make it easy on her to hate him. There were so many things that she wanted to make the pain easier to handle, but she got nothing except understanding and apologies.
She started regretting her decision to open back up. Her emotions had been buried, but now that they were resurfacing it wasn't just the anger that she felt anymore. It came on suddenly, but the crushing weight of what was coming hit her and she took a sharp breath when it did. Tears were filling her eyes and they started to fall when he told her that he couldn't do simple anymore. Adrian knew how well he handled crying, or rather didn't, so she tried to play it off by staying quiet.
Her fingers shook as she brushed the tears from her face and she covered her mouth and nose to muffle the sniffling. It didn't stop and she knew that it wasn't going to, "Why couldn't you just get angry at me? Why couldn't you just scream and yell and make me hate you? This isn't fair, Dylan. None of this is fair."
Isn't she a dream come true?

The moment his words came out, he knew the weight it bore. They were no longer merely one night stands strung together with cute moments. Her reaction to it wasn't what he expected but it didn't surprise him.
Dylan dropped down slowly beside her and plucked her hand to hold. He left his grip loose so she could pull away if she wanted to.
"I'm not the one you're angry with. At least...I'm not the only one you're angry with." He said softly. "I'm sorry I'm not giving you the outlet you need. I just need you to know that I'm here."
He needed to know that at least one person in his life didn't think he was a piece of garbage. This, he knew, was what Cassidy had needed all those years ago. He couldn't make up for it for Cassidy but he could at least offer some semblance of comfort for someone else who is grieving.

All The Boys
She came here to entertain you
It wasn't supposed to happen this way. He was supposed to be her mistake, the one that she made before meeting the perfect guy. That's what she'd expected, that's what she'd hoped for. And there he was, showing her that it wasn't the mistake she thought it was. He was showing her that he could be the guy that wasn't perfect, but that could understand her perfectly. That was what she knew she needed, but it wasn't what she wanted to accept.
He took her hand and she hesitated before slipping her fingers between his and locking them together. Adrian leaned against him slightly and kept her eyes cast down as he listened to what he said. She was angry with him for how he left, but she was angrier at the fact that she was so used to being left when it mattered. And now her mother was leaving her, and though it started out unwillingly, she was starting to see that her mother was ready to be done.
Adrian's teeth clamped down hard on her lip to draw her attention away from the painful thoughts and towards the pain in her lip. She bit down so hard that she drew blood. She sucked in her lip and took a deep breath, "She collapsed the day after you left. I think she's giving up."
Isn't she a dream come true?

He blew out a sigh of relief when she slipped her fingers through his. He tightened his grip on her hand and placed it on his lap. He was also glad that she seemed to be listening to what he had to say. It was going to be a lot more difficult with Cassidy, he knew.
Dylan winced when Adrian told him about the collapse. His thumb ran up and down the back of hers in a soothing gesture but he was scared for her. And he was scared for Amelia.
He didn't know what to say so he just pulled his hand out of hers to put his arm around her shoulder, drawing her close.

All The Boys
She came here to entertain you
The moment she started talking, she realized that she needed to get it all out. If he was there for her, she should be able to tell him what was really going through her mind. Of course, she was nervous that it would only make him leave again, but that was part of it. It was a test to see just how serious he was. If he left again, she knew that she was going to have to stay away from him for good.
His arm slid around her shoulders and she placed her hand on his knee, "I don't know what else to do for her. I've tried everything I could think of, but she's just empty now. So..." She paused and took a slow breath. "So I started preparing. Her will is dealt with, the funeral is almost arranged and I'm trying so hard to find the rest of our family. My mother never talked about them and I never asked. I just feel like they should be there."
If not for her mother, for her. She needed a family.

Dylan couldn't imagine having to deal with what Adrian was dealing with now. He had had the luxury of being young. But he still remembered how resentful he was of the people who came to the funeral who didn't know anything about his mother.
The only people he needed were his grandparents, his father and his sister, everyone else didn't matter but they were there, crying their fake tears and consoling him without actually knowing what he felt. Adrian had to be the one to call everyone.
"Have you asked whether she wants them there?" Dylan asked.
